I just cut about 4 inches off of my hair. It was so long - butt level - that it was unmanageable.
I showered and conditioned, then took the little scissors in my sewing kit, brushed it out. Snip, snip, snip. It is a little longer in back, but it is so curly that no one will notice.
I love how cheap it is to cut my own hair. Luckily I have never had a bad experience... Yet. One day I will end up with a self-inflicted mullet. Until then, it's the Jew way, or no way...
